Small island community
Sugar Island is a small township with less then 700 full time residents.
Sugar Island is a very rural community with access only by vehicle ferry. There is one general store open year round. There is plenty of nature and wildlife that live on the island.
The Township has joined the Eastern Upper Peninsula Connect Consortium to bring fiber Broadband to Sugar Island.
The Township is also actively involved with the St. Mary's River Keepers, A Harbor Safety Committee to develop Island #1 into a multi-use, multi-season trail system.
Transportation
The Sugar Islander II is operated by the Eastern Upper Pennisula Transportation Authority (EUPTA). Road are maintained by the Chippewa County Road Commission (CCRC). If there are any questions or concerns, their contact information is below.
